The FDA released an announcement earlier in March alerting consumers to a recall of Mylan’s EpiPen and EpiPen Jr products. The manufacturer of the epinephrine injection devices voluntarily recalled 13 lots of these auto-injectors. The device was manufactured by Meridian Medical Technologies and distributed by Mylan Speciality.
EpiPen products are auto-injectors used for emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions. For example, if someone allergic to bee venom is stung by a bee, the EpiPen will prevent the person from going into anaphylactic shock if taken immediately.
The recall was the result of the discovery that the devices may contain a defective part. This defect would prevent the auto-injector from activating, which might cause potentially fatal malfunctions.
The number of reported failures is quite small, but the products that potentially contain a defective part are being recalled because of the potential for life-threatening risk if a severe allergic reaction goes untreated.
If you use an EpiPen, contact Stericycle at (877) 650-3494 to find out whether or not your product has been affected. As of the discovery, 13 lots distributed between December 17, 2015, and July 1, 2016, have been identified with the defect. These are also the only EpiPen lots impacted by the U.S. recall. Consumers who have EpiPens from lots not included in this recall don’t need to replace their EpiPen prior to its expiration date.
For a full list of the affected lot numbers, visit the FDA website’s press announcement detailing the recall here. Consumers affected should keep and use their current EpiPens if needed until they get a replacement.
